Maldives?

There seems to be another country in South Asia which apparently is crazier about cricket than Bangladesh….. Maldives.

I was just looking at their website (click here to take a look) it looks like their side is returning after winning a world cup. President coming to the airport to welcome them, Traditional dancers, and a huge number of school children out there to cheer the return of the victorious team, a number of ministers, many state dignitaries, a full fledged band, walk down a red carpet…..

And what exactly did the team achieve? They beat Bhutan and Thailand in a triangular cricket series !!

What?! And its not that they won it for the first time, they defended it. And if you are imagining what happenned the first time, well, the team was paraded through the streets of Male and were given a presidential guard of honor !!

It is great that they love cricket so much, and also have tremendous official backing. But my question is, why is their standard so low overall in Asia?

It’s looks like a nation gearing up for cricket. It’s nice to know one another south asian country devoting towards cricket.
    It means more competitions……….

Nasir, According to Cricinfo The Maldives only became an ICC Associate member in 2001, so they’re still young which might explain the low standard, like Sobhit Man Shrestha was saying, give them more competition experience
    and their standard should rise.

The Maldives is a small country with a very small scope for the development of their cricket. Though they possess some dedicated cricketers, they possess only 1 ground and have no turf wickets, and this is partly because of the lack of space in the country itself. However the Maldives is developing and is receiving tremendous aid from the Srilankan cricket board and the ACC. I have seen them play and at the ACC tournaments they are able to match up to countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Oman and Kuwait, however lack the experience that expats who play for these countries have.
