News: Bermuda beat Canada in a thriller…

Bermuda beat Canada by 3 wickets, with 3 balls to spare in the second match of the WI Tri Series. This puts them in the final with Zimbabwe, with a rehersal game tommorrow.

This is of course better news than Bermuda losing to Canada by 100 runs or so, because that would have opened up a new pandoras box about the standard of the new associates. Since this was a close match, and Canada should have won it once they had Bermuda down to 89/7 chasing 151, one can say that the difference between these 2 unoffically weakest ODI teams is not a lot. But it is nonetheless great news for Bermuda, who have not only taken a victory in the first ever ODI they played, but they have beaten regional rivals and the team that beat them at the ICC trophy last year. Well done to them, and hopefully it would take some pressure off them for tommorrows game against Zimbabwe.

As I have said before, one just doesnt know what Bermuda will do.

Good to hear that Bermuda have made history by becoming the first Associate member to win their first ever ODI!! This win indicates how closely matched the two teams are although it must be said that Bermuda have been playing competitive cricket for some time unlike Canada who, I guess are playing for the first time since October 2005.

    Nasir..

Do you have any information on the kind of crowds that attended this match and the one yesterday? I’m trying hard to find information but in vain.

It would have been a much better idea to have this tri series taking place in Bermuda or Canada, much to delight of their home fans. I’m sure the ICC could’ve relaxed the norms required of a ground to get ODI status if that’s going to provide more cricket and hence help in the development of the sport in these countries. For that matter, I don’t think the two new ODI grounds in Scotland possess better facilites or crowd attendances for ODIs than the ground in Hamilton, Bermuda where the Annual Cup match takes place in front of 5,000+ fans!!

    Ram,

As far as I know, Zimbabwe beat Australia in their first ever ODI, and Aus was a test team, not another associate. So that record still holds.

Regarding the grounds in Bermuda, I think there were some serious problems with the quality of the pitch overall. And the ICC process would have meant that this Tri Series would need to be postponed. So I think it was ok, because these teams also get a chance to play with some clubs in WI for practise, and get to see world class facilities. Also, WI gets to test out some of their facilties before the world cup.

No…. I am not sure about attendence at these matches. I myself want to know as well, so will keep an eye out if some info comes along. But there should have been a few Bermudans who would have shown up to back their team… boy, did they get their money’s worth…..
