News: Dutch Schiferli to miss Sri lanka games…

Dutch leading bowler Edgar Schiferli sustained an injury and is in fact going to be out of cricket for 3-4 months. This is terrible news for the Dutch, not only from the point of view of the Sri lanka games, but also because they are quite weak on the pace department. Looks like Victor Grandia will probably get a call up for the Dutch, but he was not that impressive, even against Denmark. Mr. Sanath Jayasuriya may not be too kind on him.

With Schiferli out, Ten Doeschate iffy, Tim De Leede and Darron Reekers recovering from injuries, Netherlands may end up getting a big thrashing. Key would be the availablity of Ten Doeschate, because he is also a good medium pacer, and has quite a few wickets usder his belt in the English county circuit.

The worrying part of this injury is the fact that by the time he heals, he may well have missed the rest of the Hoofdklasse season and with only an Inter Continental Cup game or two before the World Cup warm up games, it doesn’t really give him much time to prepare.

He’s going to be missed in that time, there’s no doubt about it, but it does give someone else a chance to put their name into the minds of the selectorsand the games between the various Netherlands teams and the MCC could take on a little more importance for any aspiring Dutch fast bowlers.

Well, for the A team against MCC, they have 4 seamers in the squad, and I think that now they will play them all becuase they need one of them in the main matches. But from what I know, all of Victor Grandia, Ernt Van Giezen, Sebastian Gokke and M Jonkman are not exactly top quality. None of them will be able to fill in the boots of Schiferli.

Yep Nasir is correct. Sri Lanka will miss Schiferli.
But at least as Cuen says, an opportunity will be presented to an aspiring bowler.
When I last saw Grandia bowl I was quite impressed. Like Schiferli, he was bowling around the 128-130kph mark. He is also a useful batsman.
Ernst van Giezen offers variety with his left arm seamers.
The associates haven’t had much luck with injuries and availabilities in 2006 but I suppose its about getting everything right for the big gig in 07.

I found something interesting today. Mr Victor Grandia, has in fact played an ODI in 2002, against Sri in Sri. He got hit for 40 runs in 5 overs, but he also picked up a wicket, and that too of Jayasuriya !

I remember that game, it was in the Champions Trophy, and a one-handed catch by Tim De Leede on the boundry made CNN’s World Sport’s “Play of the day”:)

Getting back to Grandia and Schiferli, given the he had ODI experience, I could not understand why on Earth the KNCB had chosen to leave him behind when the Dutch squad went to the 2003 World Cup, fast bowlers work best in tandem, and I felt the Schiferli got stranded without a suitable partner (They took Ruud Nijman, but he never played a single game). That’s why I hope Grandia goes to the West Indies, so the Dutch squad is able to have a sharper opening pair.
