News: Dutch squad for Africa ‘home’ series

  • Luuk van Troost (Excelsior ’20, captain) (unavailable for IC Cup v. Canada)
  • Jeroen Smits (HCC, vice-captain, wicketkeeper)
  • Peter Borren (VRA)
  • Daan van Bunge (Excelsior ’20)
  • Ryan ten Doeschate (Essex)
  • Tom de Grooth (HCC)
  • Mark Jonkman (HCC)
  • Muhammad Kashif (VOC)
  • Alexei Kervezee (HBS)
  • Tim de Leede (VCC) (unavailable for IC Cup v. Bermuda)
  • Maurits van Nierop (VRA) (tri-series only)
  • Darron Reekers (Quick Haag)
  • Pieter Seelaar (Hermes-DVS)
  • Billy Stelling (HBS)
  • Eric Szwarczynski (VRA)
  • Bas Zuiderent (VOC)
  • Interestingly, they may field a stronger team against Canada because Van Troost wont be playing. Van Troost was a pretty effective all rounder about 10-15 years ago……. but now he is just too old.

I am surprised that Schiferli has not recovered as yet. Van Nierop has recovered from a fracture but Schiferli has not been able to recover?? Its the usual Dutch team, with the usual problems. Ineffective bowling will be their main problem, with Reekers and Stelling not being able to provide the necessary support to the batting. The batting looks quite strong for associate countries.

A decent side no doubt, but Peter Cantrell really must show some initiative and imagination, Grandia should be in amongst this squad and Stellings expense and Buurman should get the nod as well (don’t know ahead of who though.) Nasir, I think it’ll be another month or two before Schiferli is back up to shape, so I’m not surprised that he isn’t in the squad.

There is a bit of a mystery about Dutch cricketers actually…… you dont see them complaining as much about taking time off from work etc. Scotland, Ireland and Canada stories, and even those from Bermuda, are always full of players complaining about being part time, but the Dutch seem to always be able to go about their tours…… even this year, this is the second African tour they have, in addition to having some games against Denmark on weekdays and also the Euro champioships………….

What they do have are people like Kloppenburg who give up the national team altogether if they cant juggle their day jobs with cricket properly.

In what capacity does Luk Van Troost play in limited overs games anyway?? He usually bowls 2-3 overs, and usually doesnt come to bat till the last 5 overs……..
