Why Afghanistan is not playing Asia Cup?

This is a strange decision. Afghanistan is the only associate ODI status country in Asia, and they have the status courtesy of the World Qualifier, and not just the ACC Cup. It is surprising that they have not been included in the Asia cup. Since the Asia cup is an ODI tournament, you would have thought that even if they dont want to play the ACC qualifier (which probably is Afghanistan anyway) they would still play Afghanistan due to their global standing.

    Nasir, which teams are playing in the next Asia Cup?

    And isn’t Afghanistan still an affiliate? Might that have something to do with it? Or could it be that only the top 6 teams in the ACC rankings are allowed to play?

    I agree that they should also be in the Asia Cup very soon. They are not in the Asia Cup till now as they are an Associate or rather Affiliate nation in the cricket rankings. But with their progress they will soon gain test status.

    I would really like to see them playing the Asia cup pretty soon.

    @Chris,

    yes they are an affiliate nation in cricket and thats why… but I am sure they will soon improve and get test status if they continue with their spirited cricket .. from what I saw today as they played their first big match in international cricket against us today I can say that they are good but not upto the standards of the big nations. They might be better than Bangladesh too but not sure about the rest. They are nowhere near the big 3 of world cricket – India, Australia and South Africa and they will exit in this tournament. Maybe they could have done better in a weak group but surely not in a group with the biggies of international cricket India and South Africa. They might have been better placed had they lost the ICC T20 qualifiers final against Ireland as that would have resulted them in getting placed in the weakest group of T20 WC instead of Ireland and they might have pulled up an upset there and got more noticed. Anyways they are spirited and hard working and I would like to see them in competing in world cricket soon.
