Very interesting. China has won their first ever representative cricket match. Bhutan beating Maldives also seems to be an interesting indication, given the amount of interest in cricket in Maldives, and the the fact that Maldives have been affiliated with ICC for much longer.
Rego? Are you in Thailand watching all this? How about some first hand feedback?
I have come across an update on the Maldives cricket board website about a Cricket Carnival that they held recently. Personally I am a little surprised that only 170 kids were particiapting, and not a 1000……. but nonetheless, it made me think that every club in Netherlands needs to hold such an event, for at least 100 kids, every year…… this should be for kids new to the game….. those who decide that they would like to further pursue the sport, or show immense natural talent, should be able to do so by joining the club….. it would not only be good publicity for the club, but it will also directly add to the revenues by getting more members……… so it is sort of a win win situation….. and with 60 clubs in Netherlands, you are looking at 6000 new kids being introduced to the game every year, so you are creating a potential following for the national team as well…… which would certainly help in this era for Dutch cricket with the ODI calender and all……….
I have mentioned this before, but I just thought that I would give a concrete example for what should be done in a Cricket session of this sort…….
There seems to be another country in South Asia which apparently is crazier about cricket than Bangladesh….. Maldives.
I was just looking at their website (click here to take a look) it looks like their side is returning after winning a world cup. President coming to the airport to welcome them, Traditional dancers, and a huge number of school children out there to cheer the return of the victorious team, a number of ministers, many state dignitaries, a full fledged band, walk down a red carpet…..
And what exactly did the team achieve? They beat Bhutan and Thailand in a triangular cricket series !!
What?! And its not that they won it for the first time, they defended it. And if you are imagining what happenned the first time, well, the team was paraded through the streets of Male and were given a presidential guard of honor !!
It is great that they love cricket so much, and also have tremendous official backing. But my question is, why is their standard so low overall in Asia?
